Volkswagen is steering the mid-sized Passat upscale in Europe, aiming to lift the model clear of a struggling market for mid-priced cars without alienating its core family customers.
The Passat, which has racked up over 22 million sales globally since its 1973 launch will be unveiled in its latest form in Berlin on Thursday. The new car is expected to hit European showrooms in November.

BMW won the June U.S. luxury sales race and widened its lead over the Mercedes-Benz brand and Lexus during the first six months.
Last month, BMW sold 30,201 vehicles, a 12 percent increase, helped by the 5-series sedan, which surged 77 percent to 7,940 deliveries. Mercedes sales rose 9 percent to 26,506, helped by a 25 percent gain to 6,500 for the E-class sedan.

Ford believes it can win premium brand customers in Europe with the Edge large SUV, which will go on sale in the region late next year.
