PSA mirrors VW, readies megaplatform to cut costs

PSA/Peugeot-Citroen is planning to produce its compact, mid-sized and SUV models on a common platform that also is likely to underpin models made by alliance partner General Motors.

The struggling French automaker is looking to borrow from Volkswagen’s money-saving megaplatform strategy as a way to stem massive financial losses that have forced staff cuts and a planned factory closure in France.

General Motors Vice Chairman Steve Girsky isn’t happy with the lukewarm reception the Opel Ampera plug-in hybrid has received in Europe.

“All the governments in Europe said, ‘We want EVs, we want EVs,’ ” Girsky said last week at the Geneva auto show. “We show up with one, and where is everybody?”

VW targets 60% rise in China production by 2018

WOLFSBURG (Bloomberg) — Volkswagen Group plans to increase production 60 percent by 2018 in China, where the German company’s earnings last year rose by more than 40 percent. Capacity in China will rise to 4 million vehicles a year by 2018 from about 2.5 million currently.

A new plant in China approved by the supervisory board will build as many as 300,000 vehicles yearly and will start operating in early 2016, CEO Martin Winterkorn said today.
