Brazilian market outlook clouds Fiat Chrysler’s ambitious plans

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles hopes to raise vehicle sales in Latin America by 44 percent over five years but a recent big drop in volumes and weakening outlook in Brazil, the region’s biggest economy, threaten to spoil its ambitions.

Two years ago Latin America still accounted for nearly a third of Fiat Chrysler profits, helping to offset a slump in Europe sales.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles today reported a slightly lower-than-expected rise of 7 percent in third-quarter operating profit as weaker margins in North America compounded a slowdown in Latin America, but the automaker stuck to its full-year guidance of a 14 percent rise in operating profit, excluding one-off items.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV’s Chrysler Group said on Wednesday it is recalling 381,876 Ram trucks mostly in the United States to correct a potential fire hazard.

The U.S. government’s auto safety agency, NHTSA, responding to criticism of its slow response to safety issues, told the manufacturer of millions of potentially faulty air bags to make replacement parts faster and do more testing to find the cause of the problem.
