Warning other drivers of a speed trap is a constitutional right
A man has won his court case, claiming he cannot be fined for flashing his lights to warn other motorists of a speed trap, but unfortunately, he won the case in Texas. According to the Orlando Sentinel, a Circuit Court judge said that the officer who gave Ryan Kintner a ticket had misapplied a state law banning aftermarket flashing emergency lights. That seems pretty sensible, as headlights are not exactly aftermarket items. However the judge also ruled that flashing your lights to communicate with other drivers is protected by the right to free speech.
Drivers addicted to anti-social media
The latest report on motoring from the RAC Foundation has found that 19% of under 24-year-olds have used social media while driving. All motorists have been aware of the dangers of holding mobile phones (21% have admitted to doing that), then the big danger became texting (38% of the under 44 year-old age group say they are guilty). Now we have social media to worry about as well. The idea of updating your Facebook profile on the move is probably quite attractive – until the update says, “Just crashed my car” – or worse.
Mitsubishi L200: Black is the new, er, upgrade
Mitsubishi has introduced a pricier version of its L200, featuring black detailing. We can remember the time when the economy version of a car had grey or black bumpers and you had to pay extra for body-coloured ones (the first Ford Ka, for example). Now black bumpers are so rare, Mitsubishi has decided it can charge extra for them.
Latest NCAP safety scores released
The safety organisation Euro NCAP has released the test results for the BMW 3 Series, Hyundai i30,Mazda CX-5 and Peugeot 208.All four achieved a top 5 star score, although there were some differences between them. Euro NCAP said that, “car makers are rising to Euro NCAP’s challenging 2012 5 star requirements, especially in the area of pedestrian protection where the thresholds have been significantly increased this year.”
