CarMD auto repair survey: New Jersey drivers lead ‘check engine’ repairs

When the dreaded check engine light illuminates on the dashboard, drivers in New Jersey now pay the most in the nation to have it diagnosed and repaired, at an average cost of $392.99, according to CarMD.com Corp.’s analysis of more than 160,000 repairs made on vehicles with check engine light problems in 2012.

Indicating a coastal shift from West to East, and rounding out the top five most expensive U.S. states/districts for auto repair were no. 2 District of Columbia, no. 3 California, no. 4 North Carolina and no. 5 Maryland.

CarMD American Vehicle Health Index: First jump in car repair costs in six years

CarMD.com Corp., a provider of car repair data, released its 2013 CarMD Vehicle Health Index™ ranking of check engine-related car repairs and costs for model year 1996 to 2012 vehicles. For the first time in six years, car repair costs jumped 10 percent nationwide to $367.84 on average per repair.

The no. 1 most common repair remains a faulty oxygen sensor, which can reduce fuel economy by as much as 40%. With gas prices and repair costs rising, this annual Index sheds light on vehicle failure data and repair trends that impact safety, reduce fuel economy and can result in more expensive and spiraling repairs if left unaddressed.
