Volkswagen has the Passat Alltrack and Skoda has the Octavia Scout for those who like the practicality of an estate, but need it with better off-road capabilities.

Finally SEAT has unveiled their version of a so called soft-roader dubbed X-PERIENCE, based on the Leon ST. That is one hard to spell and remember name, but the formula is familiar.

The Leon X-PERIENCE comes with permanent four-wheel drive, higher ground clearance (+15mm compared to the Leon ST) and robust protection moulding on the door sills and wheel arches.

Compared to the Leon ST it also has a revised front with new air intakes, integrated fog lamps and a front spoiler with aluminium-look. The rear shows a new bumper with an aluminium-look insert and chrome tailpipes.

This new Leon family member will be available with 2.0-litre TDI in two power outputs: 148bhp and 181bhp.

The 148bhp TDI with 320Nm of torque linked to a six-speed manual delivers a pretty impressive 57.6mpg, while the 181bhp unit linked to a DSG transmission as standard, has a fuel economy of 55.4mpg with 0-62mph taking 7.1 seconds.

Other notable standard tech goodies include a four-wheel EDS dynamic control system with electronic differential locks on both axles, an electronic stability programme and a multi-collision brake system delivering maximum safety.

For extra safety you can go with optional full-LED headlights, ACC Adaptive Cruise Control with City Emergency Brake function, drowsiness detection and lane-keeping assistant.

The X-PERIENCE can haul 587 litres with the rear seats in place and up to 1,470 litres with the rear-seat backrests folded.
