Earlier this week Apple announced CarPlay, an all-new way of controlling an iPhone through your car’s native interface.

The CarPlay will roll out first on vehicles from Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo.

Later other automakers will join, including BMW Group, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai Motor Company, Jaguar Land Rover, Kia Motors, Mitsubishi Motors, Nissan Motor Company, PSA Peugeot Citroën, Subaru, Suzuki and Toyota Motor Corp.

The CarPlay connects to a vehicle’s infotainment system through the AirPlay media streaming protocol and allows owners to control the iPhone via Siri-based voice or touch inputs. You can make calls, use maps, listen to music and access messages in a much more safer way.

CarPlay is currently compatible only with the iPhone 5 series (5, 5C and 5S) and works in the Ferrari FF through a Lightning adapter but a wireless connection will arrive soon. If the wireless connection arrives, it could be that also the CarPlay could work with iPhone 4 if it has the latest iOS.

As you can see below in the videos, the CarPlay user interface looks very familiar to the one iPhone uses are familiar with.
