Ex Michigan car dealer gets prison time after fleeing

A Cadillac,Michigan fugitive who fled to Flint to avoid criminal charges has been sentenced to prison, according to a report by the Cadillac News.
Randy Brooks Sr. was sentenced Friday, Aug. 30, to 2 years, 6 months to 10 years in prison after pleading no contest to two counts of larceny by conversion and one count of forgery of a title application.
Brooks was initially scheduled to be sentenced in April 2012 in Wexford Circuit Court but fled the area. He was arrested in April in Flint while using an alias.
Authorities say Brooks and his family operated a car dealership in the Cadillac,Michigan area, Direct Auto & Truck, where he was accused of failing to pay off liens on vehicles as promised to customers and reselling vehicles with fraudulent title applications, according to the report.
Brooks, who was also initially charged with racketeering, admitted to be a third-offense habitual offender. State records show Brooks was previously convicted of obtaining money by false pretenses in Kalkaska County in 1997, fraudulent use of a building contract fund in 1996 in Gladwin County and multiple counts of larceny by conversion in 1996 in Roscommon County.
He is currently serving 4-20 years in prison after pleading to obtaining money by false pretenses in 2013 in Livingston County, according to state records.
Secretary of State Ruth Johnson announced in March 2011 that her department suspended the dealership’s license to buy and sell vehicles or deal in used parts after Brooks’ wife, Christine Brooks, declined to allow investigators to review her sales records, a violation of a previous probationary agreement.
