Donington Basks in Sunshine!
After what I’m sure most people will consider to have been a wet season for motor racing, the Donington Park today basks in early Autumn sunshine and sees the final rounds of a number of championships including the Lotus On Track Elise Trophy and Lotus Cup UK, Production BMW Championship and the GT Cup Championship.
More from the Lotus and GT Cup racing later but first, in the Marangon Production BMW Championship, #5 Ben Winrow took and held on to his early lead in a 320i to take the win in their first race of the weekend. The GP circuit, which includes the Melbourne Loop and hairpin, introduces extra challenges, with the drivers having to brake hard on a negative camber for the turn into the Wheatcroft start/finish straight.
#84 Brian Jones’ bonnet went skyward on the approach to Redgate, causing a number of drivers to lock up in reaction – fortunately every one of the 36-car grid made it through turn 1. #1 Mike Tovey did his best to keep up with Winrow, but the latter pulled away to win with #76 Harry Goodman taking third.
