complete connectivity solution for automotive market at Mobile World Congress

Oberthur Technologies, one of the world’s largest providers of security and identification solutions and services based on smart card technologies and FICOSA will demonstrate during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2013 in Barcelona a Remotely Provisionable SIM for Automotive market.

A remotely provisionable DIM will be integrated in a FICOSA’s in-vehicle telematic unit on Oberthur Technologies’ booth.

The demo will show that the Mobile Network Operator (MNO) of the SIM can be selected within seconds, thus allowing to remotely change the operator without having to remove the SIM from inside the vehicle.

Cars are connected. And as such, this connection is done by means of using the service of a Mobile Network Operator (MNO). In-vehicle Telematic Units (iVTU) are devices with an integrated SIM connecting to the cloud inside cars.

As of today, one of the challenges for car manufacturers is that once the SIM is inside the iVTU, and therefore installed in the vehicle, they are attached to the MNO’s service for life. Furthemore, the car manufacturers are not able to change the SIM each time they or the user would like to change of MNO.

This is a great advantage, more over when it is expected a massive deployment of Telematics systems in coming years due to global regulations such as eCall¹ and ERA GLONASS². FICOSA, as a Tier-1 supplier in the automotive industry, will demonstrate that its iVTUs allow this innovation.

FICOSA’s iVTUs have been recognized in the industry as best-in-class, being rewarded for several worldwide projects for major automotive OEMs.

“Thanks to Oberthur Technologies’ know-how and leadership in the field of secure technologies, we are pleased to showcase innovation that represents a major milestone in our effort to promote connectivity solutions (Subscription Manager and associated Remote Provisionable DIM) for the M2M environment,” said Cédric Collomb, Managing Director of the Telecom Business Line at Oberthur Technologies. “Working closely with FICOSA, one of the leadersin the automotive industry is a proof of our willingnessto be at the cutting-edge ofthe M2M technologies.

“We live in an exciting age where new standards and mandates are enabling compelling new features and services inside connected vehicles. Connected vehicles marketis growing every year, giving the drivers the opportunity to have new technologies never seen before inside the automotive industry. The cooperation between companies is playing a key role in the fast-paced M2M market. Good example of that cooperation is the demonstration inside Barcelona’s MWC, merging Oberthur Technologies’ know-how in the security field, and FICOSA’s iVTU technologies. FICOSA is well positioned inside M2M market by means of proprietary patented technology,” said Jose Maria Forcadell , Advanced Communications Business Unit Director at FICOSA.
