Citroen’s new C3-XR subcompact crossover will remain a China-only vehicle after the brand ruled out European sales of the model.

Citroen will begin C3-XR sales in December. The crossover will be built in a PSA/Peugeot-Citroen factory in Wuhan.

Citroen CEO Linda Jackson said the C3-XR’s design profile was adapted for the Chinese market where customers want more spacious interiors, larger overall designs and automatic transmissions.

Citroen says the C4 Cactus, which went on sale in Europe earlier this year, is a better fit in European markets for customers looking for subcompact crossover-styled vehicles.

Subcompact crossover sales are booming in Europe but PSA would be adding a rival to the Peugeot 2008 if it sold the C3-XR in Europe.

The C3-XR sold in China will offer a 1.6-liter gasoline engine and a six-speed automatic transmission.

China plays a crucial role in Citroen’s goal for its overseas sales to eventually represent more than half of its sales compared to 40 percent in 2014.

Citroen says its sales in China rose 19 percent to 210,000 units through August.
