Birth of stage rallying to be celebrated at Goodwood
May 24, 2014
Ian

Monte Carlo winning driver Rauno Aaltonen will roll back the years when he gets behind the wheel of an ex-works Mini at this years Goodwood Festival of Speed as part of a celebration of the ‘Birth of Stage Rallying’.
The Finn famously won the Monte Carlo Rally in a Mini in 1967 and although he won’t be driving that exact car, Aaltonen can be seen in the ex-works car in which he finished seventh in the 1964 event. Alongside him will be another Mini Cooper S, formerly campaigned by Paddy Hopkirk.
The Mini duo will be joined by a host of classic rally cars including several Ford models with illustrious pasts. Not only will the very first Mk1 Escort RS1600 feature, but it will be joined by the car in which Roger Clark won the 1972 RAC Rally.
Two Mk2 RS1800 models can also be seen on the Skoda Forest Rally Stage. One is the car in which Ari Vatanen won the 1981 World Rally Championship while the other is an earlier example, taken to victory in the 1975 RAC Rally by Timo Makinen.
Fiat will be represented by examples of the two cars that achieved its 21 WRC wins, the 124 Abarth and 131 Abarth, while an ex-works Datsun 240Z and Opel Kadette GT/E will also attract attention.
Cars campaigned by two British heroes of the era, Russell Brookes and Tony Pond, will also be present – a Sunbeam Lotus campaigned by two-time British Rally champion Brookes, and an ex-Pond Vauxhall Chevette completing the line-up.
