Getrag Ford Transmissions, a joint venture between Ford and the Germany’s Getrag, has named Sue Slaughter (photo above) as its chief operating officer. Slaughter, 45, takes up the role on January 1 and succeeds Kevin O’Neill, who is retiring.

Nissan is boosting production in Russia as the collapse in the ruble hits its profits. The company started production of its X-Trail SUV at its St. Petersburg factory this week and will add the Qashqai next year as part of a  €167 million investment that has doubled the plant’s annual capacity to 100,000 units.

Chrysler is bowing to demands from U.S. safety regulators and will add about 179,000 vehicles to a recall for air bags that could explode with too much force.

Researchers from North Carolina State University and Qatar University have developed a new high-entropy alloy that has a higher strength-to-weight ratio that they say is unmatched by any other metallic material.

Ford hopes to get a fresh start and erase bad memories for some owners when it launches the new version of its in-car, interactive touch-screen system next fall.
