Volkswagen keeps lavishing money on supercar maker Bugatti, its most exclusive brand, even as the German group plans painful cuts in its core auto business.
Bugatti is working “very intensively” on a successor to the Veyron, CEO Wolfgang Duerheimer said in an interview at the Paris auto show.
Remember the black-and-yellow Veyron that was spotted outside of Bugatti factory in July?
Bugatti Veyron is probably the most iconic modern day supercar. The total production run of 450 cars is expected to reach its end later this year or in early 2015.
Bugatti may build a hybrid successor to its 1,200-hp Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse, sources said.
Volkswagen said Audi’s former development chief, Wolfgang Duerheimer, will head its Bentley and Bugatti brands.
It will be Duerheimer’s second stint at Britain-based Bentley and France-based Bugatti. In February 2011, he took the helm at both brands for 19 months, succeeding retiring chief Franz-Josef Paefgen.
