Budget 2012: the car industry’s response


Following the news that the motorist will get hammered a little more by George Osborne, most of the major motoring groups and publicity-seeking companies have had their say.We all knew what was coming in the 2012 budget, really, but that hasn’t stopped the outpouring of indignation. That said, some groups have reacted positively. Here are some of the comments:

fuel duty to rise 3.02 pence per litre on 1 August

The hopes that the budget might see a cut in fuel duty have been dashed. The Chancellor, George Osborne, announced that fuel duty would rise by 3.02 pence per litre fuel duty increase on 1 August as planned. He portrayed himself as being sympathetic to the motorist by saying that there would be no above-inflation fuel duty rises until oil fell below £45 per barrel.

Ford’s Budget Day fuel saver – 85 mpg Fiesta


Ford has chosen Budget Day to launch the new version of the Ford Fiesta ECOnetic. It emits just 87g CO2/km – meaning free road tax and no London Congestion Charge – with a combined fuel consumption of 85.6mpg.

Private parking fines soar over 400%

Figures obtained by a Labour MP show that the amount of fines charged by private car parks has increased more than fourfold in the last five years.

Mercedes reveals SL 65 AMG super-cruiser


Mercedes has lifted the lid on the new SL 65 AMG, the tin-top convertible boulevard cruiser with a supercar-matching 621bhp. See what we did there? It’s like Mercedes has lifted the lid off a box or something, revealing the car, but it also works because you can literally lift the car’s ‘lid’. Which is another way of saying ‘roof’. Amazing.If you’re confused because of a vague recollection of this car having been released already, recently, we can understand why. You’re wrong, but we do understand. The SL 63 AMG was shown not so long ago, at the Geneva Motor Show. This is the SL 65.
