Drivers urged to switch off when idling

Drivers have been urged to switch off their engines when idling for one minute. According to the Energy Savings Trust, London drivers alone are wasting £60 million per year by not doing so.

People tend to forget that leaving the engine running unnecessarily is actually an offence. The Highway Code says: “You MUST NOT leave a parked vehicle unattended with the engine running or leave a vehicle engine running unnecessarily while that vehicle is stationary on a public road.” Some London boroughs are now imposing £80 fines if drivers spend a long time unloading their vehicles with the engine running.

Bradley Wiggins calls for compulsory cycle helmets – possibly

Bradley Wiggins’ celebrations of his amazing Olympic Gold follow-up to the Tour de France victory were marred by the death of a cyclist outside the Olympic Park, apparently run over by a bus turning left at a junction.

Bradley Wiggins (one is tempted to call him Sir Bradley, as it can’t be long now), said of the crash that the government should be “legalising helmets to make them the law to wear” and said that he had been knocked off his bike a few times when growing up.

Buy one car, get one free

Fans of Renault in Spain won’t believe their luck: Laguna and Espace buyers in the country can now get an electric Twizy thrown in for free.

It’s no secret that Renault have been struggling, and add in a cash-strapped Euro country and you’ll find a very bad market for car sales.

So here’s Renault’s solution. Buy any of its big models, and you get its electric Twizy as well.

Motorists driving less as high fuel costs persist

High fuel costs continue to plague Britain’s motoring community, with nine out of 10 citing escalating petrol prices as their main complaint.

The research by Motors.co.uk showed that fuel costs, surging insurance premiums, badly maintained roads and continuous roadworks are forcing motorists to change their driving habits, reported The Guardian.

Car sharing ramps up with remote unlocking

Car-sharing is often touted as a way to cut costs and be environmentally friendly, with schemes like Streetcar in London offering an alternative to traditional car rental and car ownership.

And now, the States is leading the way after a scheme called RelayRide announced it would introduce remote unlocking, following a partnership with GM subsidiary Onstar which will provide the in-car technology.

A RelayRides user lists their vehicle information on the website, along with times of availability and an hourly rate. Thanks to Onstar, lenders no longer need to be on hand to hand over the keys – the borrower simply texts a code or uses a smartphone app to gain access to the vehicle.
