"War on motorists" is a myth says think tank

The war on motorists doesn’t exist and fuel taxes should be raised without delay, a left of centre think tank has said in a new report.

Pay-as-you-drive road charging and congestion charging should also be widely implemented to raise funds for public transport, according to the Institute of Public Policy Research (IPPR), which has close links to Labour, reported The Daily Telegraph.

Bank Holiday strike on Severn Bridge?

There is the threat of a strike at the Severn Bridge toll booths over the bank holiday weekend.

Strike action including a 24 hour walk out, an overtime ban and work-to-rule is being threatened next Friday 24th August in a dispute over shift patterns. That coincides with the start of the Bank Holiday weekend, which would affect drivers on the M4 and M48.

"Postcode lottery" of petrol prices

A survey of petrol prices across the country has found that drivers in the most expensive region pay around £250 more each year to fill up their cars than those in the cheapest area.

The most expensive place to buy petrol is the Shetland Isles at 145.9 pence per litre (ppl). It does seem slightly unfair that the area closest to the oilfields of the North Sea has to pay the highest prices, but it is also one of the most remote places in the UK. The cheapest place is Grampian, in Scotland, at 129.7 ppl.

Another recall – for faulty petrol

This is a new one on us. In the USA, BP has issued a recall for petrol sold between August 13 and August 17 in the states of Illinois and Indiana.

Recalls for car-related problems are not uncommon, but we can’t remember a recall for petrol. Apparently a BP storage facility became contaminated and local drivers have been reporting problems with their cars – including one who apparently has incurred a $1,200 repair bill.
