4,000 complaints a month over used car dealers


Citizens Advice reports that complaints about second-hand cars bought from independent dealers are the most common complaint on its Advice helpline.

The service, which started in April, received 150,000 calls in its first three months on all subjects, of which 12,000 calls were about used cars from dealers. Approximately 75 per cent of all car-sales complaints were about independent dealers, rather than official franchised dealers or private sellers (although we can’t see what Citizens Advice could do about a private seller, unless it was a trader pretending to be a private seller).

"Impatient" overtaking driver charged with killing four people


A driver has appeared in court in Wales following the drowning of four people in a reservoir.He overtook two vehicles, and allegedly hit the leading car which was turning right into a lay-by, sending it into a reservoir. Gordon Dyche, 24, denies causing death by dangerous or careless driving.

People like speed cameras – for everyone else


According to a survey by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), 82 per cent of people now think it is acceptable for authorities to use speed cameras.

However 45 per cent think that raising income is still a main reason for their use, according to the results of the IAM’s annual speed camera survey. Interestingly, the more prevalent speed cameras are in a given region, the less popular they are with local people.

British motorists cutting back on driving to save money


A survey from Green Flag says that 41 per cent of British motorists have reduced the number of their journeys in response to high fuel prices.

Eight per cent have gone further and traded in their car for something more economical and 11 per cent say they are making better use of public transport.

Average car age rises to 7.44 years


The average car is older now than it was a quarter of a century ago, according to new figures, which are being blamed on motorists buying older cars as the recession continues to bite.The average age of cars on UK roads is 7.44 years – a significant rise from 2008 when it was under 7 years (6.93).
