Sat nav pioneers TomTom launches hands-free kit

You might know TomTom best for the funny voices in your car telling you which way to go. But the sav nav specialists are branching out from route-directing and launching a new hands-free car kit for smartphones.

The kit comes in two versions, to work with the iPhone or other smartphones that use a micro USB charger such as Android phones. It features an advanced noise and echo cancellation system designed to reduce background noise for the caller and remove ambient noise for the driver.

Leeds-Bradford is more congested than London – or almost anywhere else

TomTom, the satellite navigation people, have found that Leeds-Bradford is Britain’s most congested conurbation and is fractionally worse than London. Using real-time travel data from TomTom-equipped cars, the survey found that journey times were lengthened by 28% by congestion, compared to 27% in London. West Yorkshire drivers spend an average of 86 hours in traffic jams per year compared to 74 hours in London. As someone who has lived in both conurbations, this correspondent can confirm TomTom’s findings are depressingly believable.

TomTom releases iPhone app that detects speed cameras

Satellite navigation giant TomTom has launched an iPhone app that “improves safety by keeping users informed about speed limits during their journey. “That’s one way of looking at the company’s new Speed Camera app. Another way is that it encourages drivers to look at their phones behind the wheel in order to avoid getting caught speeding.

Launched yesterday, the app includes the location of 95% of fixed speed cameras, and has the backing of 1.6m users in 15 countries, any of which can update the database with the location of temporary or mobile cameras.
