Mercedes-Benz sold more than 2,300 of its CLA compact coupes in its first week of availability in the United States, helping the brand post a 7 percent September gain and widen its U.S. premium-vehicle lead with rival BMW.

Tesla is pushing beyond the friendly confines of its California home to take on the world’s biggest luxury-car brands in their home market. The Tesla Model S, on display in Frankfurt this week, is hitting the autobahn just as the German goliaths start selling their own electrics.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, facing elections in less than two weeks, warned the EU against imposing tough environmental targets on German luxury carmakers. Merkel, speaking at the Frankfurt auto show on Thursday, blocked a deal in June that would have set Europe’s car industry an ambitious target to reduce CO2 emissions.

Daimler plans to start selling a self-driving car by 2020 to help its Mercedes-Benz brand regain the top spot among premium carmakers, development chief Thomas Weber said.
