Concerns raised over Audi, BMW lending cars to EU ahead of tough CO2 targets

 Some European politicians and transparency campaigners have raised concerns about German luxury carmakers Audi and BMW providing free cars to EU member states while negotiations were under way over strict new CO2 emissions targets.The immediate concern is sponsorship involving the free loan of scores of luxury cars to five countries over a two-and-a-half period that coincided with the debate over new limits for carbon dioxide emissions.

The five countries consecutively held the EU presidency during that time and were responsible for leading policy negotiations.

BMW and SGL to invest €100M to double automotive carbon fiber production

Germany’s Handelsblatt reports that BMW and partner SGL will invest more than €100 million ($137 million) to double their joint production of carbon fiber to 6,000 metric tons a year from 3,000 tons a year now. In addition to meeting demand from the i3 and i8, the carbon fiber will also be used in new 7 series in 2015, according to the report.

BMW will start building Mini in the Netherlands this summer

BMW said it will build the new Mini in the Netherlands starting this summer in a move to expand production capacity beyond its plant in Oxford, England.BMW said the UK would still be the main manufacturing base for the Mini but said production of the Mini hatchback model would be split between Oxford and a factory in Born, Netherlands run by contract manufacturer VDL Nedcar.
