West Midlands Police took delivery of 30 Nissan LEAFs that will be used by ten local policing units, who will run three “diary car” LEAFs each.

The cars won’t be used for high speed chases and patrolling. The diary cars are used for pre-arranged meetings with victims of crime and locals who have contacted the police force. Diary cars average 40 to 45 miles per day, which is enough considering Leaf’s 124-mile range.

Bob Jones, Police and Crime Commissioner for West Midlands Police said: “We welcome the new LEAFs, which fit in perfectly with the operational requirements of diary cars and will significantly cut our fuel costs while also reducing our carbon footprint.”

Last year police in Portugal took delivery of eight Nissan LEAF electric vehicles, that are used for policing the large urban areas of the country. These cars are suitable for other police duties as well because they come with flashing blue lights, sirens and clear ‘Polícia’ markings.
