VW will debut diesel-electric Up minicar at Tokyo Show

The Twin-Up has a hybrid powertrain under its hood. At the rear is a lithium ion battery pack and 33-liter fuel tank.
Volkswagen will debut a highly fuel-efficient diesel-electric hybrid version of its Up minicar at the Tokyo auto show on Nov. 20.
VW says the concept, called the Twin-Up, uses 1.1 liters of fuel per 100 km (214 U.S. mpg/257 UK mpg)
The four-seat Twin-Up has a plug-in hybrid powertrain derived from the automaker’s XL1 two-seat car unveiled at the Geneva auto show in March.
The powertrain also includes an 800cc two-cylinder diesel engine with an electric motor. Power flows through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
The Twin-Up has a lithium-ion battery pack under the rear seat and extending into the trunk
The concept weighs 1205kg (2,656 pounds) and has CO2 emissions of 27 grams per kilometer. It can travel up to 50km (30 miles) under electric power.
VW has not yet decided whether the Twin-Up will go into production.
VW launched a battery-powered version of the Up in Europe in September. The e-Up starts at 26,900 euros in Germany.
The automaker is also building a limited run of the 200 XL1s, which will go on sale next year at a base price of 111,000 euros.
