VW to sell electric cars in U.S. by 2015

Volkswagen plans to start selling electric cars in the United States in 2015, the New York Times reported, citing a Volkswagen official.

The company aims to enter the U.S. electric car market with a battery-powered version of its compact Golf and would follow with more models if demand increased, said Marc Trahan, an executive vice president for VW’s American unit, according to the New York Times.

Europe sales

Volkswagen will begin sales of electric vehicles in Europe with the launch of its e-Up next month.

The minicar will cost 26,900 euros ($35,700) in Germany. European sales of the e-Golf will begin in the middle of next year and it is expected to be priced around 35,000 euros.

Both models were unveiled by VW at last week’s Frankfurt auto show.

In Frankfurt, Volkswagen Group outlined plans to offer as many as 40 electric or hybrid vehicles across its brand portfolio. The automaker says it will produce 14 vehicles with alternative drivetrains by next year.
