Volvo cuts prices, adds equipment for S60, V60 and V70

The new version includes much more equipment, however. New features include satellite navigation system, high performance multimedia audio system, Bluetooth and rear park assist

The cars are aimed at business drivers by combining the right equipment, with lower taxable list prices (so-called P11D prices) and reduced Benefit in Kind (BIK) liability thanks to low CO2 emissions and fuel consumption. Volvo has a little table that shows tax saving of up to £55 per month compared to direct competitors for a higher rate taxpayer.

Hayfever sufferer? Buy a Volvo

It’s the season for hayfever, and it seems like half the country is sniffling from the condition.

Volvo can help. Surprised? Yes, me too. But the carmaker, which has long led the way for vehicle health and safety, now fits all its models with either an air quality system or pollen filter as standard.

Cars fitted with an Air Quality System use an interior air quality sensor which measures the levels of particles in the incoming air. It can automatically close the car’s air intake without any input from the driver before levels inside the car become unhealthy, such as when toxic carbon monoxide is detected from the vehicle in front.

Emergency braking systems to lower insurance premiums

Speaking at an international conference, Thatcham Research, the insurance companies’ technology centre, said that insurance premiums could be lowered for cars fitted with systems that automatically brake the car at speeds up to 18 mph. Such systems, currently available on some Fords, Volvos and Range Rovers amongst others, appear to cut insurance claims by up to 25%. The idea is that if the car detects an obstacle (e.g. a wall, another car or even a pedestrian) and calculates that the driver has not braked in time, the car will automatically perform an emergency stop. They have been available for a little over a year now, so this is the first time that insurance companies have been able to tell if they make a difference. The evidence quoted at the UK conference echoes a US government study that came to almost exactly the same conclusion.

Electric cars are not the answer, say drivers

A survey of UK drivers by YouGov has revealed that most of us don’t see electric cars as a better alternative to conventional cars in the long term.In response to the statement electric cars are the only real future alternative,” only quarter of 2,000 motorists actually agreed with it. Around half disagreed with it entirely. The other quarter said “meh”. Almost 70% of drivers think electric cars are a “limited” alternative to today’s internal combustion cars, suggesting that, despite the best efforts of Nissan and Renault*, an electric future is far from assured.
