15,000 more car jobs for the UK – SMMT

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has predicted that up to 15,000 new car industry jobs will be added in the UK in the next few years. Speaking to industry website just-auto.com, the SMMT said that car production is up 10% in the UK so far this year – something very few countries could claim at the moment. Some £5.6 billion has been committed to the UK in investments: virtually all manufacturers in the UK have said they will increase UK production, with especially big increases coming from Jaguar Land Rover, Vauxhall and Nissan.

Your next car – designed by rally drivers?

British rally specialists Prodrive (the people that made Subaru rally cars and currently make the Mini WRC car) say that they are increasingly being asked by car manufacturers to develop mainstream cars for major manufacturers. Speaking to industry website just-auto, Prodrive’s Managing Director Tony Butcher, said that car companies are so busy at present that they are outsourcing major parts of a new car’s development to Prodrive.

Apparently, prototypes are being delivered to them in a very raw form and Prodrive then develops the way the steering feels and how the suspension is tuned – or even replacing the suspension design altogether.

Toyota to boost UK production for Auris replacement

Hot on the heels of Honda’s good news yesterday comes news from Toyota that UK production should rise by one-third. Speaking to industry website, www.just-auto.com, Tony Walker, Deputy Managing Director, Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK, said that the company is now recovering from the economic crisis of 2008 that led to a drop of over 50% to Toyota’s UK car output.
