Tyre safety organisation issues pothole warning

TyreSafe has warned that the current pothole epidemic in the UK is a threat to road safety, and urges drivers to check their wheels and tyres regularly. In 2012 compensation claims from drivers who’ve endured damage cost local councils a total of £22.8 million in compensation claims.

Almost 10,000 convictions for illegal tyres

According to research by TyreSafe, last year, 9.639 people were convicted in England and Wales for driving with dangerous or defective tyres.  A defective tyre is not simply of academic interest. In 2011, there were more than 1,200 casualties resulting from accidents caused by illegal, defective or under-inflated tyres.

Buying used tyres? Beware

A survey of used tyres – often called part worn tyres – has shown that many are potentially dangerous. TyreSafe (a not-for-profit organisation) carried out a study which involved the purchase of 50 random part worn tyres from retailers across the UK. It found that 98 per cent were being sold illegally as they did not meet current requirements, but more seriously, over a third of the tyres were found to contain potentially dangerous forms of damage or non-compliance.
