Silverstone Classic: bigger and better than ever

The 2013 Silverstone Classic – the world’s biggest classic motor racing festival – broke its own record number of entries, producing some of the best historic racing ever seen in the process.

A record total of 1113 single-seater, sports car and touring car machines, spanning nearly 90 years of motor sport history, followed up Saturday’s action with another packed bill of races on Sunday, watched by a record crowd of close to 90,000 fans over the weekend.

A parade of more than 1200 Porsche 911s took to the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit – a world record number of the cars – as the Silverstone Classic celebrated the 50th anniversary of the world’s most iconic sports car.

Sabine Schmitz to join the Group C grid at Silverstone Classic

Sabine Schmitz is preparing to make her Silverstone Classic (26-28 July) debut racing a 220mph Porsche 962 in one of the massive event’s thrilling races for Group C prototypes. The 44-year-old German first came to fame as the ‘fastest taxi driver in the world’, a title she gained for driving passengers around the full 12.9-mile Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit at very high speeds.

Stars line up for Celeb race at Silverstone


This year’s Silverstone Classic will include a Celebrity Challenge race, with the famous faces racing each other in Morgan sports cars. Well-known names include Jay Kay (without which no such race would be complete), Heston Blumenthal, Hollywood actor Sir Patrick Stewart, ‘Comedy Dave’ Vitty from Radio 1, Sky Sports presenter Vicky Gomersall, Brian Johnson from AC/DC, Strictly Come Dancing’s Brendan Cole plus Wimbledon TV presenter Andrew Castle.
The latest name to be added is Julia Bradbury from Countryfile, who is driving in aid of the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research as well as the Birmingham Children’s Hospital and the RPJ Crohn’s Foundation.

After Goodwood, it’s the Silverstone Classic


Goodwood Festival of Speed might seem impossible to follow, but the ever-expanding Silverstone Classic (Saturday 21 July and Sunday 22 July) appears to be managing it. There will be a total of 24 races. We can’t cover them all, but these are some of the highlights.One of the most famous races in British motor sport – the Daily Express International Trophy – is being revived. The prize will be awarded later this month to the aggregate winner of the two Grand Prix Masters races. First run in 1949, the roster of winners reads like a who’s who of motor sport history. Alberto Ascari won the inaugural event for Ferrari and subsequent victors include Mike Hawthorn, Stirling Moss, Jack Brabham, Graham Hill, Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart, Emerson Fittipaldi, James Hunt and Niki Lauda. Keke Rosberg won the final contest held for Formula 1 cars in 1978.
