New Renault Clio unveiled

Renault has shown the first images of its fourth-generation Clio, which will go on sale in the UK in 2013. The styling is certainly a big step forward, although we are not sure we would go quite as far as design boss Laurens van den Acker , who says, “The new Renault Clio was conceived as a piece of sensuous sculpture which stimulates desire… No acute or aggressive angles, just voluptuous curves that make you want to go up to it and caress it.”

Peugeot launches all-new 301 small saloon

Peugeot has unveiled the brand new 301 small saloon…but if you like the look of it, tough – you can’t have one. It won’t be sold in the UK.According to Peugeot, the 301 “is a clear illustration of the Marque’s internationalisation and demonstrates its desire to conquer new markets. It has been specifically designed to appeal to a wide customer base attracted by four-door saloons, which are both accessible and present an enhanced level of status.”

Peugeot 208 R2 rally car

Peugeot pulled out of endurance racing earlier this year, citing costs, but now it’s back in motorsport…and back with the new 208 supermini. The 208 R2 is the first of three competition cars due to come from Peugeot Sport, based on the 208. It’ll get its first run out at this month’s Tour de Corse in France.

Peugeot shows Nissan Juke rival

Peugeot has shown its forthcoming Nissan Juke rival at the Beijing Motor Show. Expected to be called the 2008 (Peugeot uses four figure names for its niche vehicles), it is, unsurprisingly, based on the new 208 hatchback. Peugeot is very keen to try and push its brand upmarket and sees the new model as part of that process.

Car Makers Warned: Leave Iran – or leave the USA

US lobbyists are claiming that they are forcing car companies out of Iran – on pain of becoming toxic brands in America. Last week Peugeot announced it was stopping supplies to its Iranian joint venture, which was more important than you might imagine. Iran was basically put on wheels by the Hillman/Chrysler Hunter in the 1970s and, when Peugeot bought Chrysler, it took over the deal and supplied Peugeot 405 and 406 models (the orange car above is the Hunter). The total number of Chrysler/Peugeots supplied now runs into the millions. The pull out is expected to cost Peugeot £750 million a year in lost turnover.

Hyundai followed Peugeot’s move, with the lobbyists claiming they were instrumental in the Korean company’s decision. A spokesman for United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) told industry website just-auto from New York, “We were the ones that announced Hyundai had ended its business in Iran. Our extensive consultations with Hyundai are confidential – that should give you an idea of how informed we were.”
