Mercedes unleashes GL 63 AMG

Mercedes has had its performance division, AMG, shoehorn a 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8 into its behemoth SUV, the GL. The result is the GL 63 AMG.  It’s quick, it’s stupid, and it’s coming to a leafy suburb near you in 2013. The usual stuff applies here: take one GL; add fast engine; make interior a little more fancy; attach body kit; apply AMG badges liberally; increase number of exhaust pipes; connect larger wheels; paint white.

Smart electric bike on sale, for £2,500

An electric bike by Smart, the Mercedes-owned purveyor of little cars, has gone on sale this weekend. It’s got a 62-mile electric range and costs roughly the same as an 03 plate Smart ForTwo: £2,500. (Please, no complaints – we said “roughly”.)The pedelec (pedal electric cycle) can be ordered now for late May deliveries, though we don’t expect demand to outstrip supply for what is, basically, a mode of transport that retains all that’s harrowing about a bicycle but removes the major benefit – improved cardiovascular fitness.Still, it’s a stylish looking bike, and will make going up hills a doddle.

Audi new niche…buys Ducati for $1.1bn

Audi has bought superbike company Ducati, bolstering its plans for total vehicular world domination. It means that Audi can fight BMW on two wheels now, too.The price is thought to be £700 million plus £150 million of existing Ducati debts. Quite what Audi gets for that price is harder to establish. Ducati is a great brand name for motorcycles, but has limited value for a car manufacturer. Audi says that it enhances its sporting credentials, but that seems a stretch. If someone is interested in an Audi A5, or even an R8, it is hard to imagine the fact that Audi owns Ducati sealing the deal. How many people buy a BMW car because BMW also makes motorbikes? There have been suggestions that Ducati’s clever “Desmodromic” valve system could interest Audi. This is a way of closing engine valves without using springs – a mechanical system closes them instead. However, Mercedes used that system in its 1950s racing cars and no car manufacturer has seen the need to use it since.

Audi to buy Ducati?

It’s been, ooh, months since VW Group tried to buy an automotive brand and the credit card is clearly burning a hole in their pocket. Like a shopaholic feeling the need for a new pair of shoes, VW feels the need to buy something new.
