Fiat Group’s Maserati brand received about 17,000 orders worldwide in the year to end-July, nearly triple the amount sold last year as new models started to attract buyers.

One of the best collections of Maseratis – certainly in this country – is to be auctioned at the Goodwood Revival by Bonhams in September.The seller is Anthony Hartley, who is a well-known Maserati connoisseur, and has owned, rebuilt and even re-created Maseratis since the 1950s. His collection is expected to sell for several million pounds.

De Tomaso, once famous for the 1970s Pantera, and sometime owner of Maserati, Moto Guzzi and Innocenti, has gone bust again.Alejandro de Tomaso seemed to thrive in inverse proportion to the profits of his companies – there always seemed to be another Italian government bailout around the corner. One of his 1990s designs, the Bigua even ended up as the pointless MG SV pseudo-supercar that MG Rover directors thought was so much more fun to play with than the hard work of running a car company.
