Ford’s drive to make its sport utility vehicles (SUV) and other models lighter to save fuel and boost performance will not be delayed by a recent drop in oil prices, Executive Chairman Bill Ford said on Wednesday.
Ford will lay off about 680 people at its Romanian division next year, or some 20 percent of the staff, as it adjusts to a weak European market.

Ford on Tuesday said it is recalling about 65,000 Fusion sedans in North America because the key can be removed from the ignition even if the car is not in the “park” position 30 minutes after the ignition is off, the company said.

The company began production this past week of its aluminized F-150, a high-stakes redesign of its lucrative truck—by far the nation’s top-selling vehicle. Judging by early opinions, investors can rule out a flop. “It is the best-handling full-size pickup I’ve ever driven,” wrote a Wards Auto reviewer last week. “Impressive all around,” declared Kelley Blue Book after a 1,300-mile test drive last month.
