The Sierra Club Foundation partners with CARS to take dirtiest cars off the road

Cars Could Be the Next Big Platform for Local Search

Amid praise and criticism of the flatter design of Apple’s newest mobile operating system, the company quietly introduced a potentially transformative feature in iOS7: iOS in the Car.

The feature will allow iPhone users to mirror their devices with the in-dash infotainment systems of new models from a number of major auto manufactures. The move comes as automakers are looking to bring the car to the Web, opening a new market for local services.

Growing support for smoking ban in cars

Plans to ban smoking in cars when children are present have won support in the House of Lords, but the measure would need support of MPs to become law. The private member’s bill proposed by Lord Ribeiro to make offenders liable for a £60 fine or attendance at a smoke awareness course was approved by peers, reported BBC News. The measure would need government support and David Cameron has questioned whether it is a justified move, suggesting it has severe implications for personal freedoms.

Something for nothing – cars with performance and economy

Generally speaking, we assume that more powerful cars will use more fuel – after all, that extra power has to be generated by burning fuel. However, the fast pace of engine technology means that it is not quite so straightforward. A rather clever little website called www.cleanbhp.co.uk has worked out the amount of CO2 each car produces to generate each bhp – and the results are a real eye-opener.Some of the latest-generation petrol engines produce more than twice the power for the same CO2 or fuel consumption as older designs. For example, the Citroen C3 1.1 produces 139 g/km of CO2 in return for a measly 61 bhp, whereas the Mini Cooper S with 136 g/km of CO2 produces 181 bhp. Ironically, the two engines are even distantly related – BMW’s 1.6 litre engine in the Mini was originally jointly developed with Peugeot, owners of Citroen. So how can there be such a big difference?
