Tybee Island retreats from plan to track license plates

Tybee Island officials agreed unanimously Monday to retreat from plans to install machines designed to scan and record the license plates of every car and truck coming onto the island, an idea that was met with hostile emails from people fearing Big Brother would be monitoring beach vacations.

Tybee Island officials have approved installing roadside scanners that read and store license plate information for every car and truck coming and going on the island. The mayor says the city wants the information for a tourism study, but officials are already getting angry calls and emails from residents who say tracking vehicles is too intrusive.

City officials on Tybee Island want to know more about the tourists who visit Georgia’s largest public beach, and they plan to spend nearly $29,000 on a pair of computer-linked cameras designed to read and record the license plate of every car and truck that comes and goes on the island.
