Automakers halt Russia sales on ruble’s collapse

General Motors, Audi and Jaguar Land Rover temporarily stopped selling cars in Russia this week, deciding that taking a timeout from the market was the best way to deal with the ruble’s collapse.

Automakers are battling a more than 40 percent drop in the value of the ruble since June, Russia’s biggest financial crisis since 1998.

Japan’s industry minister said on Tuesday it was up to automakers and supplier Takata Corp to handle a ballooning safety crisis that has led to the global recall of over 19 million vehicles equipped with Takata’s air bags.

At least five automakers are teaming up to determine what is causing a problem with air bags used in their vehicles and how many cars to recall because of it.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the government’s auto safety agency, said Monday that BMW, Chrysler, Ford, Honda, Mazda, Nissan and Toyota will recall cars sold in places where hot, humid weather can potentially affect the air bags.
