Highway deaths over the past five years are at historic lows, rivaling the safety statistics of the 1950s, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). With an auto industry focus on safety, stricter enforcement of driving-under-the-influence laws and broader consumer awareness, traffic fatality trends are generally favorable. But news in the past few days has raised some new concerns.

Airbag recall prompts suggestions to prevent recalls

Supply chain expert Mark Johnson of the Warwick Business School in Coventry, U.K. believes Japanese carmakers have been slow to react and should put quality and safety first in negotiating contracts with suppliers.

Toyota, Honda, Nissan and Mazda have had to recall 3.4 million vehicles across the world because of faulty airbags supplied by Takata Corp, which are at risk of catching fire or injuring passengers.
