Survey: Autonomous car – Would You Buy One

Autonomous car - Would You Buy One

Self-driving cars are getting a lot of buzz, and a new survey suggests nine of 10 drivers would consider buying one — if it meant paying a lot less for auto insurance.

A survey by CarInsurance.com asked 2,000 licensed drivers if they would buy an autonomous vehicle if they could get an 80 percent discount on insurance.

Thirty-four percent said they would “very likely” do so and 56 percent said they would consider it if such a discount was in the cards.

The Web site noted a 2008 study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that said 95 percent of accidents are caused by human error.

“Autonomous cars don’t get distracted, text or drink while driving,” said CarInsurance.com in a report on the results. “They have a 360-degree view of the surrounding area and never get tired.”

Sebastian Thrun, a robotics engineer at Google, which is developing a self-driving car, has predicted autonomous vehicles could reduce traffic accidents by 90 percent.

Nissan and Mercedes-Benz also have announced plans to develop production-ready autonomous vehicles by 2020, and other automakers are working on versions.
