New gen 2.0L diesel for BMW 220d Coupe, Active Tourer

New BMW TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder diesel.

BMW is introducing a new generation four-cylinder 2.0-liter diesel for its 220d Coupe and 220d Active Tourer. Coupled with the optional 8-speed Steptronic transmission, the BMW 220d Coupe now only hits the 100 km/h mark in a 7 seconds, but also attains a CO2 emission level of less than 100 grams/km.

In the Active Tourer, the engine delivers combined fuel consumption of 4.5 – 4.4 l/100 km (52.3 – 53.5 mpg US) with CO2 emissions of 119 – 115 g/km).

The 2-liter diesel power unit is a member of the new BMW Group engine family. It features the latest version of BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, achieves a maximum power output of 140 kW/190 hp, while delivering a maximum torque of 400 N·m (295 lb-ft). With the standard 6-speed manual gearbox, the two-door car accomplishes an average fuel consumption of 4.4 to 4.1 liters/100 km (53.5 to 57.4 mpg US) and a CO2 level of 115 to 107 grams per km.

In conjunction with the 8-speed Steptronic transmission, the corresponding levels are between 4.1 and 3.8 liters (57.4 to 61.9 mpg US), with CO2 of 107 and 99 grams respectively (figures as per EU-test cycle, depending on selected tire size). This is the equivalent of a reduction in fuel consumption of up to 0.4 liters/100 km and of CO2 emissions by as much as 12 g/km.

The latest generation of four-cylinder diesel engines from BMW offers not only further optimized efficiency, but also a number of additional qualities that comply with the BMW EfficientDynamics principle.

Compared with the predecessor engine, the power unit deployed in the BMW 220d Coupe achieves a 5 kW increase in output and a 20 N·m higher maximum torque. Moreover, the weight of the new engine has dropped by around two kilograms.

BMW also made advancements in terms of acoustic comfort and the starting behavior of the Auto Start Stop function.

The most significant attributes of the new four-cylinder diesel engine include:

  • aluminium crankcase featuring thermally joined running bushes for reducing internal friction coefficients;
  • integrated balanced shafts;
  • enhanced thermodynamics;
  • map-controlled oil pump; and
  • efficiency-optimized charger with variable intake geometry.

Optimized Common Rail Direct Injection features solenoid valve injectors that now guarantee a particularly accurately dosed fuel supply with a maximum injection pressure of 2000 bar.

Transmissions. The new generation of the four-cylinder engine in the BMW 220d Coupe coincides with the introduction of a new manual 6-speed transmission and the further development of the optionally available 8-speed Steptronic transmission, which have both been especially aligned to the engine’s performance characteristics.

The new manual transmission of the BMW 220d Coupe offers control of power throughout the entire speed range, thereby optimizing the car’s dynamic acceleration characteristics as well as gear shift comfort. During the gear shift process, with the help of a gear selector sensor, engine speed and the transmission input shaft are synchronized in order to ensure smooth engaging of the clutch.

The latest version of the 8-speed Steptronic transmission offers increased spread, further optimized internal efficiency, further enhanced transmission control and a new vibration absorber. This results not only in improved acoustic and ride comfort but also in better shifting dynamics and efficiency.

In conjunction with both transmission variants, the increase in power output and torque delivered by the new diesel engine has a positive effect on the performance and acceleration of the BMW 220d Coupe. Acceleration from 0-100 km/h has now improved by 0.1 seconds to 7.1 seconds (manual 6-speed transmission) and 7.0 seconds (8-speed Steptronic transmission) respectively. With the increase in the engine’s power output, maximum trailer load of the BMW 220d Coupe is up by 300 to 1,500 kilograms (3,307 lbs).

3-cylinder diesel. BMW will apply a new 3-cylinder diesel in the BMW 216d Active Tourer. The compact, 1.5-liter diesel has an average fuel consumption of 3.9 – 3.8 l/100 km (60.3 – 61.9 mpg US) with CO2 emissions of 104 – 99 g/km.

The diesel delivers 85 kW/116 bhp at 4,000 rpm, putting a torque of 270 N·m (199 lb-ft) on stream at just 1,750 rpm. As a result, the BMW 216d Active Tourer is able to reach speeds of up to 195 km/h (121 mph) and accelerate from standing to 100 km/h in 10.6 seconds.
