New Ford Mondeo 1.0-litre EcoBoost unveiled

Ford has unveiled first details about the all-new Mondeo, that will be fitted with its award-winning 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine. Yes a 1.0-litre engine in a Mondeo. A decade ago this would have been an insane idea, but not today.

New Mondeo is the largest-ever Ford vehicle to be fitted with such a small displacement engine. The 1.0-litre three-cylinder EcoBoost engine is the 2012 “International Engine of the Year,” and produces 123bhp and 170Nm of torque (and up to 200Nm in “overboost” mode).

“Today’s smartest technology offers customers more from less,” said Barb Samardzich, vice president, Product Development, Ford of Europe. “This is as true of engines as it is of computers and smartphones, and by equipping the all-new Mondeo in Europe with our acclaimed 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine we are delivering cutting-edge technology that delivers a very real and tangible customer benefit.”

Current Mondeo’s petrol engine starts with a naturally aspirated 118bhp 1.6-litre unit, so the new engine offers similar horsepower numbers, but with much better CO2 emissions.

New Mondeo is identical to Ford Fusion, that made its debut earlier this year at the Detroit Motor Show. Public debut is later this month in Paris.
