Mubea opens tailored rolled blanks factory in Kentucky

Auto supplier Mubea today opened a factory that makes tailored rolled blanks in northern Kentucky, just south of Cincinnati.

The $60 million, 75,000-square-foot factory will supply various automakers and is expected to create around 150 jobs by 2014.

Tailored rolled blanks are continuous roll of steels that can then be formed into many products, including B-pillars between the front and rear doors. This process can reduce the weight of these items up to 25 percent compared with conventional materials, the company said.

“The new Mubea tailored rolled blank facility is the only one of its kind in North America,” Doug Cain, CEO of Mubea North America, said in a statement. “The innovative technology we’ve brought to Northern Kentucky is a key factor in our continuing successful growth.”

Mubea has eight operations in northern Kentucky. The privately held German company’s North American operations began 30 years ago. It supplies parts to all of the major automakers with products such as suspension coil springs, stabilizer bars, and others.
