McLaren Spider goes on sale

McLaren has shown the convertible version of the MP4-12C supercar. Thankfully its name has now been shortened to 12C Spider. The new 12C Spider will be priced from £195,500 in the UK and is available to order now, with first deliveries to customers planned for November this year. Mechanically it is the same as the coupe with a 3.8 litre twin-turbo V8 developing 625 PS (616 bhp) and carbon ‘MonoCell’ chassis, while the new folding roof can be operated on the move at speeds up to 19 mph.
Antony Sheriff, McLaren Automotive Managing Director said: “While the 12C is the technological essence of a race car, the 12C Spider incorporates an additional dimension. 12C Spider owners will love the opportunity to lower the roof and hear the unhindered howl of a V8 twin turbo engine at full throttle. It undoubtedly enhances an already euphoric 12C driving experience.”
Compared to the coupe, 0-100 mph takes 0.1 second longer at 6.1 seconds and top speed is down 3 mph at 204 mph – although it might be an idea to put the roof back up for top speed runs. Official fuel consumption is 24.2 mpg. However, anyone who achieves that in a McLaren has probably bought the wrong car.
