The new Mazda MX-5 Miata 25th Anniversary Edition debuts today at the New York Auto Show, along with a newly-developed SKYACTIV-Chassis that will form the basis of the next generation all-new Mazda MX-5.

Since its launch in 1989, more than 940,000 units of the MX-5 have been produced and with the new model to arrive soon a magical million mark will be crossed soon.

The Mazda MX-5 Miata 25th Anniversary Edition will be available exclusively in Soul Red Metallic, and is based on the 160bhp 2.0-litre Roadster Coupe with power retractable hard top and either a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission.

Other anniversary model specific updates include a Brilliant Black-painted roof, A-pillars, and door mirror housings, along with off-white leather seat upholstery and door trim, hand-finished dashboard decorative panel in Piano Black.

There are also Bilstein dampers and 17-inch Dark Gunmetal alloy wheels.

The newly developed SKYACTIV-Chassis for the upcoming next-generation model shows the engine and chassis exhibited together, making it the first time that SKYACTIV technology has been displayed in a front-midship-engine layout and rear-wheel-drive configuration.

Details about the next generation model are limited, though Mazda did mention the overall weight will be reduced by more than 100kg.
