The Porsche 918 Spyder is preparing to hit the track of all tracks – the 20.8km Nurburgring in Germany.

And just in time for driving trials on the epic circuit, the latest prototype of the plug-in hybrid super sports car has been decked out in full Martini racing colours.

History between the two companies dates back to the seventies, when a Porsche 917 with distinctive Martini livery won the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1971. Martini then became the official partner of the Porsche factory team between 1973 and 1978 and the colour scheme became part of motor racing legend. It’s not surprising looking at these latest pictures, with the forthcoming 918 Spyder looking superb.

Porsche has confirmed its going after a lap time of less than 7 minutes 22 seconds, that’s eight seconds faster than the Carrera GT. The Spyder has a 4.6-litre V8 producing 570bhp enabling it to rev to a crazy 9,000rpm. Put that with a pair of electric motors, and it boasts 770bhp in total.

This means it’ll take less than three seconds to get to 62mph and has a top speed of 202mph. It also claims combined CO2 emissions of 70g/km and fuel economy of around 94mpg.

With electric power only, the range should be around 15 miles and will offer a top speed of 93mph.

Only 918 cars will be made, and with production due to start in September, it’s highly likely we’ll be seeing the finished article at the Paris Motor Show.
