Jaguar releases teaser of its BMW 3-series rival

Jaguar has released a teaser photo of its XE compact sedan ahead of European sales in 2015, followed by U.S. deliveries a year later.

The BMW 3-series rival is taking shape and is on schedule for a reveal in early October at the Paris auto show.

The XE has an aluminum body and will be the first vehicle to get Jaguar Land Rover’s Ingenium family of four-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines. Ingenium engines will be built in a new plant in Wolverhampton, in the English Midlands, starting late this year.

These are the first engines Jaguar Land Rover has designed and built in-house since being acquired by India’s Tata Motors in 2008.

The XE will be built on a new production line at Land Rover’s Solihull plant, where Range Rover and Land Rover SUVs are made. The XE will be the first car built at Solihull since Triumph sports cars and Rover cars were made there in the early 1980s.

The XE’s success is crucial for Jaguar Land Rover. The company needs the new model to help it meet tightening corporate average fuel economy and global carbon dioxide emissions standards.
