When Honda launched the S2000 back in 1999, as part of company’s 50th anniversary, it really shook up the sporty roadster segment.

With a perfect 50:50 weight distribution, the S2000 was powered by a 2.0-litre inline 4-cylinder DOHC-VTEC engine producing 237–247bhp.

The second generation was introduced in 2004 and was in production until 2009. It was in fact more of an update with the same engine.

A potential successor has been rumoured for a while and now AutoExpress reports that Honda is set to revive the S2000, but not as a roadster, but a coupe, sitting below the upcoming new NSX and above the S660.

Full green light has not been given yet, but if it us approved, then Honda would have world’s first-ever mid-engined trio of sports cars from one manufacturer.

Power is expected to come from an uprated version of the 2.0-litre petrol turbo, which will also power the next-generation Honda Civic Type R tuned to 350bhp.

The engine could also use hybrid tech, from a partnership with the McLaren Formula 1 team.

If approved, then the new S2000 is expected to arrive in 2017 with a prices to start from around £35,000.
