Last April, the Hennessey Venom GT reached a top speed of 265.7mph, making it the fastest production car available to the public.

Not as fast as the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport, which managed to set an official average top speed of 268mph (431,072 km/h) at Volkswagen Group’s Ehra-Lessien track near Wolfsburg, Germany back in 2010. But the Veyron’s production model is electronically limited to 258mph (415 km/h), so basically the Venom GT is faster.

The Venom GT recently improved their top speed time, when it hit 270.49mph (435.31 km/h)on the 3.22 mile runway at the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida.

The speed was confirmed by a Racelogic Vbox telemetry system, but it will not make it into the Guinness Book of World Records, as it didn’t do two runs, one in either direction. Also the production run of the Venom GT is too small to qualify as a production vehicle.

The 1,244-horsepower Venom GT has even more room for top speed as the length of the runway was and the car was still accelerating, when driver Brian Smith started to slow the car.

The Venom GT already owns the Guinness World Record title, as the world’s quickest car to 300 kilometres per hour (186 mph) at 13.63 seconds.
