At Google’s I/O conference, Sundar Pichai, the leader of the Android team, revealed some interesting data and also a new Android Auto OS, which is is very similar to Apple’s CarPlay.

First of all the Android OS has grown very fast and according to Sundar has 1 billion monthly active users and users are checking their phones 100 billion times a day. That translates to 125 times a day on a per-person basis.

Moving on to the Android Auto, which was earlier during development known as Auto Link, it offers very similar functionality as Apple CarPlay – you connect your smartphone with your car to access different apps like Google Play Music, Google Maps and voice-activated texting in a more convenient way.

Developers will be able design new custom apps for the Android Auto in the near future.

Google has a powerful lost of automakers lined up to offer the Android Auto, including General Motors, Ford, Fiat Chrysler, Honda, Volkswagen, Hyundai, Kia and Nissan.

It is not known yet which cars are first to offer the system, but first cars are expected to arrive in dealerships end of the year. Most likely we will hear about first cars with Android Auto at the Paris Motor Show in October.
