GM to introduce more diesels in US; Cruze “first of many”

2014 Chevrolet Cruze Diesel - GM to introduce more diesels in US; Cruze “first of many”

During the Advanced Powertrain forum at the CAR Management Briefing Seminars in Traverse City, Steve Kiefer, GM’s vice president of global powertrain, said that GM will introduce more diesel-engined passenger vehicles in the US.

For the US market, GM currently offers only a 2.0L turbo diesel for the Cruze and the 6.6L V8 Duramax for the Silverado and Sierra HD pickups. (The Duramax is built by GM’s DMAX joint venture with Isuzu.)

These are to be joined by a 2.8-liter four-cylinder Duramax diesel—already offered in global markets—in MY 2016. However Kiefer, formerly head of Delphi’s powertrain systems unit who took over GM’s powertrain unit last September, said more will be coming.

According to WardsAuto data, the Cruze diesel has accounted for 5,974 deliveries since its launch—2.0% of the compact sedan’s powertrain mix.

The Volkswagen Jetta TDI diesel, the main diesel competitor for the Cruze diesel, sold 46,409 over the same period; the diesel accounts for 26.7% of its powertrain mix.

The Chevrolet Cruze diesel will be the first of many diesel-powered passenger cars General Motors will offer in the United States. … We will continue to introduce more diesels as appropriate and as the market accepts them.
