A pair of highly desirable Ford GT40s, a car famed for its Le Mans victories, are up for sale. The notorious model, which found glory at the Le Mans 24 hours (which happens on June 16-17 this year), and later in Steve McQueen’s film Le Mans, will be available to buy – for the right price – at an auction in California this August.

The two cars, offering both road and racing variations, are a competition-bred 1968 Gulf/Mirage lightweight racing car, raced through 1968 and later used as the camera car in the film Le Mans and a unrestored 1967 Mk1, widely regarded as one of the most original GT40s in existence, according to auction house RM Auctions.

Considered one of the most legendary racing cars ever made, the GT40 was the first American-built racing car to take victory at La Sarthe, and also scored consecutive victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans from 1966 through 1969.

The road car version had similar mechanical specifications to its racing counterpart but with slightly more comfortable cockpits, which included fully upholstered interiors. In total, only 133 of all variations of the original factory GT40 were built before production ceased in 1969.

RM California managing director Shelby Myers said that he anticipated ‘strong interest’ in the cars’ sale.

The auction will be held on 17-18 August in Monterey, California on the same weekend as the nearby prestigious Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.
