Next Mondeo to offer inflatable seat belts

The dividing line between a car interior and a bouncy castle gets ever thinner. Ford is to offer inflatable rear seatbelts on the 2013 Ford Mondeo, which instantly become a kind of mini-airbag in the event of an accident. Ford says that the inflatable belt disperses the energy of a crash across a body area five times larger than would a conventional seatbelt.”We’ve tested the system extensively using our entire crash test dummy family and it offers extra protection over the standard rear seatbelt system,” said Joerg Doering, core engineering seatbelts engineer, Ford of Europe. “Bringing together the attributes of an airbag and a seatbelt is a significant development. This technology isn’t currently available in Europe.”

Fuel price freeze welcomed

Pasties, static caravans, charities and now fuel: clearly if we make enough fuss about a new tax, the government runs away and hides. FairFuelUK, the campaign backed by the Freight Transport Association (FTA) which has been lobbying the Government for the past year in order to stop planned fuel duty increases has welcomed the “delay” in the fuel duty rise.

Black Boxes to be fitted for young drivers in Scotland

The Scottish government is financing a pilot project to fit black boxes to business cars being driven by the under-25 age group. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) in Scotland has teamed up with MyDrive Solutions, an insurance telematics specialist, to provide the infrastructure for the 12 month project. RoSPA says that research has shown that this type of technology can significantly reduce crash rates, levels of risky driving behaviour and fuel costs. For organisations who participate in the project, MyDrive Solutions will supply and install a black box at the driver’s house or place of work. The box is fitted underneath the dashboard and there should be no impact on the vehicle’s warranty.

Buy a petrol not a diesel; warns car auctioneer

The leading car auctioneer, BCA, has warned that buying a diesel car to save money in the long run might not always to be best option for private buyers. It says that, although a diesel version of a car will sell for more than the equivalent petrol version at resale time (mostly because it would have been around £1,000 more to buy new), the petrol may actually lose a smaller proportion of its value.Tony Gannon, BCA Communications Director commented, “There can be little argument that the average price of a diesel car always outperforms that of a similar average petrol model… However, when looking at the retained value over the typical 40 month working life of a volume fleet & lease car, the petrol car – perhaps surprisingly – is the stronger performer by some three percentage points.”

Driving Licences to become smart cards

It appears that the paper section of the driving licence is to go the way of the dodo around 2015. The idea is to have all the information on one smart card which could include the licence holder’s photo, any endorsements and iris and fingerprint biometrics.
